Black History Month was first celebrated in February 1970, and within just a few years, it was recognized nationwide. Since then, it has served as an important time for reflection where we get a chance to honor the achievements, resilience, and lasting contributions of African Americans throughout history. From groundbreaking cultural moments to powerful leaders, artists, innovators, and everyday heroes, Black history has shaped the world we live in today.
While one month can never fully capture the depth and richness of this history, it offers a meaningful opportunity to learn, celebrate, and start conversations. One fun and interactive way to do that is through charades. Black history charades turn learning into an engaging group activity, and can go a long way in helping players connect with important figures, moments, and cultural touchstones in a memorable way. Charades can also be adapted for kids, teens, and adults, making it a great activity for classrooms, families, and community groups.

We’ve put together a thoughtful collection of charades ideas inspired by Black history, culture, and achievement. Scroll down to explore a variety of prompts organized into clear categories to make choosing ideas quick and easy.
Charade prompts often lead to follow-up questions and discussions. So, by acting out and discussing some of these ideas, players will gain a deeper understanding of African American contributions across music, sports, science, politics, and the arts.
Our list below is a great place to start if you particularly interested in Black history ideas, but if you’re looking for more general charades ideas, feel free to use our Charades Ideas Generator to discover random prompts to act out.

Inventors and Innovators
Another important group of people you can celebrate in your black charades game are black scientists, engineers, and creators whose inventions changed everyday life.
We have included their inventions for reference purposes. We also suggest that you can chose to focus on their invention rather than the person themselves. For example, instead of acting out George Washington Carver, you could act out peanuts or farming crops, and instead of Madam C.J. Walker, you could pretend to style hair or apply hair products.
Another fun strategy is to show how the invention is used. For instance, you can pretend to shoot water like a Super Soaker, pat your chest as if fixing a pacemaker, or mimic ironing clothes on an ironing board. This will help players guess the innovations while keeping the game lively and engaging.
- George Washington Carver – peanuts and crop innovations
- Madam C.J. Walker – hair care products
- Garrett Morgan – traffic light and gas mask
- Lonnie Johnson – Super Soaker
- Granville T. Woods – railway telegraph system
