Charades themes are categories or topics that group charade words, phrases, or actions players will act out in the game. Themes can be broad or specific depending on you or your group’s interests. Examples of charade themes include:

• Movies – the whole game round is about acting out films.

• Animals – everything you act out relates to animals.

• Holiday Fun – all words/phrases relate to Christmas, Halloween, or Valentine’s Day.

Why Is Focusing Charades Games On Certain Themes Important?

Focusing your Charades games on certain themes is important because it makes the game smoother, more fun, and more engaging. Here’s why:

• Reduces confusion and hesitation – When players know the theme, they immediately have a mental framework. For example, if the theme is “Movies,” players instantly start thinking of film titles or characters, instead of wasting time guessing random things like animals, food, careers etc.

• Keeps everyone on the same page – A shared theme ensures that clues are relevant to the group’s expectations. This avoids frustration from players acting out or guessing things that feel “out of place.”

Themes vs Categories in Charades

With that in mind, looking at the three examples of themes I’ve shared and perhaps what you’ve seen from other Charades idea sources, you might be wondering: is there really a difference between a theme and a category? The answer is yes, and here’s the explanation.

First, let’s start by defining categories…

Categories are subdivisions within a theme and tend to be more specific. Categories are used to organize charades words or phrases so that players can focus more narrowly. We can say that categories give structure inside the theme.

• Example for the Animals theme:

As you can see, from the above examples of themes and categories, there’s actually a little overlap between the two and it depends on how you use them. The distinction between theme and category is flexible in Charades. See:

• If you are running an entire game round around one broad idea, then your list acts as themes. Example: you can declare “Animals” as the theme for the round, and everything acted out must relate to animals.

• If you are running a game round under a bigger theme, then your list can act as categories. Example: the theme is “Entertainment,” and “Movies & TV Shows” or “Books & Literature” can become categories within that theme.

So, the key difference is that themes are the big umbrella, categories are subdivisions—but the same label can serve as either, depending on how you structure your game.
